Why the pain keeps flaring up
From an osteopathic perspective, a disc herniation is rarely the beginning of the story — it is often the visible end of a chain: one spinal segment that has carried an uneven load for years because of posture, long sitting, or old injuries the body quietly compensated for.
According to Statistics Canada, four out of five adults will experience at least one episode of back pain — the symptom that most often accompanies disc problems.
You know the story: the MRI said "disc herniation" — and it sounded like a verdict. Some days you almost forget about it; then a long evening at the computer or a careless lift brings the pain roaring back, and the fear follows: "Is it getting worse?" Creams and pills calm it for a while, then it flares again. Here's what osteopathy sees behind it: a herniation is rarely the beginning of the story — more often it's the consequence of a segment that has been overloaded for years, by poor posture, long sitting, old injuries the body quietly compensated for. And the pain you feel is often not the disc itself — it's the body's guarding: muscles locking into spasm around the segment, tissues swelling, nerves getting pressed. Treating only the pain is like silencing a smoke alarm without looking for the fire. We don't work with the disc itself — we work with the vicious circle around it: spasm, swelling, guarded movement.

Early warning signs your body sends

The body rarely flares up out of nowhere — it usually knocks for a long time first. Morning stiffness that eases only after moving around. Your back tightening during a long drive — say, to Toronto and back. The need to keep changing position while sitting. Bending to tie your shoes feeling like a project. A leg that feels heavy or "not yours" by evening. That's not "age" and not "it'll pass on its own" — those are early warning signs that the tissues around the segment are under strain. The good news: at this stage the body is easiest to help — it hasn't yet locked into a permanent guard. The sooner you respond to these early warning signs, the shorter and easier the way back.
How classical osteopathy may support you with a disc herniation

Classical osteopathy does not "put the disc back" — that's not how bodies work, and no honest practitioner promises it. What we can do is work with everything around the affected segment. During a visit we look at the whole picture: how you stand and move, where the muscles are guarding in spasm, where movement has become limited. Then — gentle manual techniques: delicate work with the locked muscles and stiff joints around the segment, with no sharp "cracking" or jerking. This approach may help ease the protective muscle spasm, support mobility around the affected area, and may help with the associated muscle tension and pain — giving the tissues a chance to calm down instead of guarding. We don't promise to erase the herniation and we don't guarantee timelines — results are individual. And we stay honest: if we see the situation needs a doctor's attention, we'll say so directly. Visits are led by osteopaths Dmytro and Natalia.
What your first 45-minute visit looks like
Your first visit lasts 45 minutes — like every appointment — and there's no rush, especially with a disc diagnosis on your mind. First, a conversation: what the MRI showed, when the flares come, what you've already tried, what your typical day looks like. Then — a careful observation: how you stand, move and bend. Next — a gentle hands-on assessment of the tissues and mobility around the affected area, always within comfort. Please note: we do not diagnose medical conditions — we assess the state of soft tissues and mobility to understand what to work with using our hands. And already at the first meeting you get a clear plan: what we saw, what we'll work on, and how many visits it will most likely take.
How many visits will you need?
If you're living with a disc herniation and the flares keep coming back — don't wait for the next one. Come in: we'll look at what's guarding around the segment and make a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is a disc herniation dangerous?
Most herniations exist alongside muscle guarding and swelling that can improve — but certain warning signs need urgent medical care: loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. If you have any of these, see a doctor or go to emergency right away.
Can anything be done without surgery?
We don't work with the disc itself — we work with the vicious circle around it: muscle spasm, tissue swelling, and guarded movement. Easing that circle may help the area calm down and function better, though no one can promise a specific outcome.
Should I bring my MRI results?
They can be helpful, but they are not required. We assess how your spine moves, where it is restricted, and how the surrounding tissues are behaving — the scan is one piece of the picture, not the whole picture.
How long is an appointment and how much does it cost?
Every appointment lasts 45 minutes and costs $140 CAD. First and follow-up visits cost the same.
