When the world suddenly tilts
From an osteopathic perspective, dizziness is often viewed through the lens of the upper neck. This small, densely innervated region carries the weight of the head and talks constantly to the balance system — and when it becomes stiff and restricted, that conversation can turn into unsteadiness, fogginess or the sense that the ground is unreliable.
According to a population study published in Archives of Internal Medicine, dizziness or vertigo affected about 23% of adults in the past 12 months.
You know the story: you turn over in bed — and the room turns with you. You stand up quickly — and the floor tilts under your feet. You bend for a bag — and have to grab the wall. There is no “real” pain, but the ground under you feels unreliable. Your neck feels stiff, your head foggy, sometimes your ears feel full or your stomach turns. You start avoiding quick movements, and that drive to Toronto suddenly feels like an expedition — what if it hits on the highway? People tell you “it’s probably your ears” or “it’s just stress”, but nothing really changes. If dizziness comes and goes and feels worse when your neck is tense — you are not imagining the link. The neck and the head are neighbours, and what happens in the upper neck can echo into your balance.

Early warning signs your body sends

The body rarely loses its balance out of nowhere — it usually wobbles gently first. Light-headedness when you stand up fast. Fog after an hour at the screen. A stiff neck by evening. That full, pressurized feeling in the ears. A wave of nausea in the morning that passes after tea. Unsteadiness when you turn your head quickly. These are early warning signs, not a reason to panic — but not a reason to shrug them off either.
There are also RED FLAGS — seek urgent medical care right away, don’t wait for an appointment: sudden severe dizziness unlike anything before, fainting, numbness or weakness on one side, slurred speech, sudden vision changes. These may signal conditions that need a doctor immediately — osteopathic care is not for acute emergencies.
How classical osteopathy may help with dizziness

When dizziness is linked to tension in the neck, classical osteopathy may help — gently, with no “cracking”. Here is the connection our osteopathic teachers describe: the first cervical vertebra, the atlas, carries the whole skull, and through the neck’s vertebrae runs the vertebral artery that feeds the cerebellum and the brain stem — the areas running your balance. Tension and stiffness around C1–C2 may disturb this delicate neighbourhood: the artery’s path, the dura mater attached right there, and the tiny proprioceptive “balance sensors” in the deep neck muscles. Add venous outflow through the deep neck veins — spasm can slow blood leaving the head, giving that “heavy head” feeling. During a visit we assess the upper neck, the suboccipital area and the body’s overall balance, then use gentle manual techniques to ease tension where it may be pulling the system off-centre. This approach may help reduce neck tension and support steadier balance — we make no promises about any medical condition, and we do not diagnose dizziness: we work with the state of soft tissues and mobility.
What your first 45-minute visit looks like
Your first visit lasts 45 minutes — like every appointment — and there’s no rush. First, a conversation: when the dizziness comes, what it feels like, how long it has been there, what your typical day looks like, and whether you’ve seen a doctor about it (if not, we may suggest you do). Then — an observation: how you hold your head, how your neck moves. Next — a careful hands-on assessment of the neck and suboccipital tissues: where they are tense, where movement is limited. Please note: we do not diagnose medical conditions — we assess the state of soft tissues and mobility to understand what to work with using our hands. And already at the first meeting you get a clear plan: what we saw, what we’ll work on, and how many visits it will most likely take.
How many visits will you need?
If the world tilts a little too often — and your neck feels part of the story — come in. We’ll look at where the tension is coming from and make a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can osteopathy help with dizziness?
It depends on the cause — and we will be honest about that. If your dizziness comes and goes and feels worse when your neck is tense, gentle osteopathic work on the upper neck may help ease the unsteadiness. But dizziness can also come from the inner ear, blood pressure or other medical causes; if your story doesn't fit a musculoskeletal pattern, we will tell you plainly and point you toward the right specialist.
Is it safe to have my neck treated when I feel dizzy?
Osteopathic care is gentle and non-invasive, and the approach is always adapted to your symptoms and your comfort. We start with a careful assessment before working with anything.
Do I need a referral to book?
No referral is needed. You can book an osteopathy appointment directly.
What does an appointment cost, and how long does it take?
Every appointment lasts 45 minutes and costs $140 CAD. First and follow-up visits cost the same.
