The shoulder: built for reach, easy to overload
From an osteopathic perspective, shoulder pain is rarely an isolated problem: it is often the visible end of a chain of restrictions — a stiff mid-back, a forward-head posture, or a rib cage that doesn't move the way it should — that gradually shifts load onto the shoulder and its small stabilizing muscles.
According to a systematic review in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, shoulder pain affects a median of 16% of people in community-based samples, making it one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints worldwide.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body — it lets you reach overhead, behind your back, and across your body. That freedom comes at a price: the joint relies on a small group of muscles and tendons, the rotator cuff, plus a delicate balance of the shoulder blade, collarbone, and upper back.
When that balance shifts — from desk posture with rounded shoulders, repetitive overhead work, old sports injuries, or simply years of “sleeping on that side” — the shoulder starts paying. People come to us with the classic patterns: rotator cuff irritation, impingement-type pain when lifting the arm, frozen shoulder stiffness, bursitis-like aching. We don’t diagnose medical conditions — we assess how the shoulder moves, where it’s restricted, and what the surrounding tissues are doing.

Early warning signs worth noticing

Pain when you reach for the top shelf or lift your arm overhead. An ache deep in the shoulder that wakes you when you roll onto that side at night. Difficulty reaching behind your back — fastening a bra, tucking in a shirt. Clicking or catching when you move the arm. A shoulder that feels “heavy” or tired after a day at the computer. Stiffness in the morning that eases as you move — or a shoulder that keeps getting stiffer month after month.
These are early warning signs: the shoulder asking for attention while it still responds easily. Noticed two or three of these in yourself? Worth looking into before the pattern settles in. One safety note: after a fall or direct blow, if the shoulder looks deformed or you can’t lift the arm at all, or if there’s persistent numbness or weakness spreading down the arm — see your healthcare provider first; those situations need a medical assessment.
How osteopathy may help with shoulder pain — gently, without force

Here’s what many people don’t realize: shoulder pain often isn’t only about the shoulder. A stiff mid-back, a neck that barely turns, ribs that don’t expand freely — all of it changes how the shoulder blade moves, and the shoulder joint pays for its neighbours’ stiffness. The body works as connected chains, so we assess the whole picture: neck, upper back, ribs, shoulder blade rhythm.
Then we work gently — soft-tissue release, joint mobilization, no cracking or forceful thrusts. This approach may help ease muscular tension around the shoulder, support freer arm movement, and reduce the compensations that keep the pain coming back. Results are individual — we don’t promise a fixed number of visits or guaranteed outcomes. Visits are led by osteopaths Dmytro and Natalia.
Your first visit: what happens
Your first visit is 45 minutes, unhurried (every appointment lasts 45 minutes). A conversation: what hurts, for how long, what you do with your arms all day, how you sleep — the story matters. An assessment of posture, shoulder blade movement, and how far the arm goes in each direction — and where it stops.
Then a gentle hands-on tissue assessment: which muscles are guarding, where movement is limited, how the neck and upper back are involved. We do not diagnose medical conditions — we assess soft tissues and mobility to understand what to work with using our hands. At the end — a clear plan: what we found, what we’re working on, how many visits we’re planning for.
How soon might you feel a difference?
Don’t wait until you can’t lift your arm past your shoulder. Come in — we’ll figure out where the restriction is coming from and make a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my shoulder hurt when I lift my arm?
Lifting the arm narrows the space the tendons glide through — if the shoulder blade doesn't rotate freely or the upper back is stiff, the tissues get pinched with every movement. Osteopathy looks at how the whole shoulder girdle moves to find where the restriction is.
Can shoulder pain actually come from the neck?
Very often, yes. The neck and shoulder share nerve pathways and posture patterns, so a stiff neck or forward head position can refer pain into the shoulder. That is why we always check the neck and upper back as part of the assessment.
How long is an appointment and how much does it cost?
Every appointment lasts 45 minutes and costs $140 CAD. First and follow-up visits cost the same.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on the cause and how long the restriction has been building. At your first visit we assess how your shoulder moves and give you an honest, realistic picture — no promises we can't keep.
