What sciatica can feel like

From an osteopathic perspective, "sciatica" describes a pattern — pain or altered sensation travelling along the nerve's path — rather than a diagnosis we hand out. What we can assess is the tissue environment around that path: a rotated pelvis, a tight piriformis, lumbar stiffness, or a hip that doesn't glide — any of which can add friction to a nerve that prefers space. Working with that environment may support the body in calming the irritation.

According to a review published in the European Journal of Translational and Clinical Medicine, the lifetime incidence of sciatica is estimated at between 13% and 40%.

A pulling or shooting pain from the buttock down the leg — sometimes all the way to the foot. It can burn, sting, "shoot" with an awkward movement. The leg sometimes goes numb or feels "cottony". Sitting hurts, standing is easier, and finding a comfortable sleeping position is a whole quest. This is how irritation of the sciatic nerve (sciatica) can feel: somewhere along its path, tissues are compressed or tense. No need to panic — but don't put up with it for months either: the nerve likes timely help. And one honest note right away: we don't diagnose "sciatica" — we work with the tension of muscles and tissues around the nerve, which often accompanies such sensations.

Everyday things that may contribute

Long drives with no stops. A soft armchair you "sink into" all day. Lifting with a rounded back — bags from the trunk, a child into your arms. Pregnancy: the growing load on the pelvis changes the mechanics of the whole body. Sometimes one awkward movement is enough, after which something "catches" in the buttock. The trigger is often everyday and innocent — but the nerve reacts in earnest. Recognize your day in this list? Then your body has something to "tell" at the appointment.

How classical osteopathy may help with sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs through the pelvis and buttock — places where tension and imbalances love to accumulate. We gently work with the pelvis, lower back and muscles around the nerve: helping release holding, supporting tissue mobility, evening out the body's balance. Classical osteopathy techniques are delicate — no sharp manipulations or "cracking". This approach may help reduce muscle tension around the nerve and ease discomfort. We don't promise to "cure sciatica" — we work with the tissues that press and pull, and support the body's natural recovery. Results are individual. Visits are led by osteopaths Dmytro and Natalia.

What a course of visits may look like

Usually it's several visits spaced out: at the first meeting — a conversation, an assessment and the start of work; then we watch how the body responds. Acute discomfort often eases within the first 2–3 visits, and consolidating the result and working with the cause takes a few more sessions. We don't name exact timelines in advance — every body is different, and we don't guess. An honest safety note: if the leg pain is severe, has lasted a long time, or comes with warning signs — weakness in the foot, trouble with bladder control — see your healthcare provider first: such conditions need a medical assessment. We always say directly when a case isn't ours.

Small daily habits that may help between visits

If the discomfort runs down your leg and won't let go — come in. We'll figure out where the tension has built up and plan the next visits.

Frequently asked questions

Can osteopathy help with sciatica?

We do not diagnose "sciatica" — we work with the tension of muscles and tissues around the nerve, which often accompanies sensations running down the leg. Easing that tension may support the body and help you feel more comfortable, though outcomes differ from person to person.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the person and the history of the problem. We cannot promise a fixed number of sessions or a guaranteed timeline — after the first assessment the practitioner will suggest a sensible plan and review it with you as things change.

How much does an appointment cost?

Every appointment lasts 45 minutes and costs $140 CAD. First and follow-up visits cost the same. You can book through our website.

Should I rest or keep moving?

In most cases, gentle movement is better than complete rest — long sitting usually aggravates the leg. Avoid positions and movements that clearly make the sensation worse, and ask the practitioner for guidance suited to your situation.
