When your body is building a person (and aching doing it)
From an osteopathic perspective, pregnancy pain is not a malfunction but an adaptation under strain: as the baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, the pelvis tilts, and ligaments loosen to make room. The body reorganizes itself around the pregnancy — and gentle, pregnancy-adapted manual care may help that reorganization stay more comfortable.
According to a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, about 63% of pregnant women experience lumbopelvic (low back and/or pelvic girdle) pain during pregnancy.
You know the story: by month six, rolling over in bed feels like a construction project. Your lower back aches by evening. Your pelvis clicks when you walk, and getting up from the couch takes strategy. Bending down to tie your shoes feels like a distant memory. All of this is normal — your body is doing something extraordinary, and hormones are loosening ligaments to make room for the baby. But "normal" doesn't mean you have to just endure it. As the baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, the pelvis tilts, and the lower back takes on extra load day after day. Gentle, pregnancy-adapted manual care may help your body stay more comfortable through these changes — so you can enjoy the wait, not just count the days.

Early warning signs worth noticing

During pregnancy, the body usually sends signals before discomfort settles in for good. Pelvic pressure after a longer walk. An ache across the pubic area or at the back of the pelvis. A sciatic-type ache running down one leg. Difficulty finding a sleep position that doesn't hurt. Lower back stiffness in the morning that takes a while to ease. A waddling gait that wasn't there a month ago. These are early warning signs — signals that your musculoskeletal balance has shifted under the extra load. They're common, and they usually respond best when addressed early, before the body "gets used to" the new pattern. And of course: your doctor or midwife is your first point of contact for anything medical — our work is complementary, always.
How gentle osteopathy may help during pregnancy

During pregnancy, osteopathy uses only gentle techniques adapted for expectant mothers — no forceful thrusts, no "cracking". We work with soft muscle-energy style releases: the muscle is gently engaged and then released, which can help ease protective tension around the pelvis and lower back. We pay special attention to pelvic symmetry — how evenly the pelvis carries the load — using careful, comfortable assessments and soft techniques that respect the extra ligament laxity of pregnancy. Positioning is fully adapted: side-lying with supportive pillows is typical, and everything happens at a pace you are comfortable with. This approach may help ease back and pelvic discomfort, support easier movement, and help you feel more at ease in your changing body. We make no promises about labour or delivery — we simply help with comfort, one visit at a time. Visits are led by osteopaths Dmytro and Natalia.
What your first 45-minute visit looks like
Your first visit lasts 45 minutes — like every appointment — and there's no rush. First, a conversation: how far along you are, what's bothering you, how you sleep and move, what your doctor or midwife has said. Then a gentle observation: how you stand and walk. Next, a careful hands-on assessment — in positions that are comfortable for you, usually side-lying with pillows. Please note: we do not diagnose medical conditions — we assess soft-tissue tension and mobility to understand what we can support with our hands. And already at the first visit you get a clear plan: what we felt, what we'll work on, and roughly how many visits may help.
How many visits will you need?
If pregnancy has turned everyday movement into an obstacle course — you don't have to white-knuckle it to the finish line. Come in: we'll look at where the strain is coming from and make a gentle plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
Yes, when performed by a practitioner experienced in prenatal care. Techniques are pregnancy-adapted — gentle, with positioning adjusted for your comfort and stage of pregnancy, and no high-velocity thrusting. If your pregnancy is complicated, mention it when you book so we can coordinate with your midwife or doctor.
When can I start — and can it help me prepare for birth?
Any trimester, including the first; many patients come when back or pelvic discomfort starts. Later in pregnancy, the focus often shifts toward pelvic mobility and comfort as the body prepares for labour.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed — you can book directly.
How much does an appointment cost, and how long is it?
Every appointment lasts 45 minutes and costs $140 CAD. First and follow-up visits cost the same.
